An article on professionalization of EA by Jason Uppal in Nov 2013 edition of EA journal got me thinking about a similar efforts else where. Some colleges like Penn State University are offering professional Master's degree in EA. I think it is a great way to attract talents from Industry and develop EA BoK - which in turn will help in professionalization of EA.

Any thoughts anyone?

"Very good idea. As far as I know, there are certifications linked to an EA framework like TOGAF, which certainly has value, but in these changing times, we must realize that there is more [to it] and that EA must also innovate.

We can learn a lot from the large amount of EA methodologies and frameworks in combination with new possibilities and requirements that our customers set, with the challenges they have, and with the increasingly dynamic world in which we live."

"I agree that academic rigor (like Penn State's) is a fantastic foundation to build the 'Body of Knowledge,' but does it fully solve the 'Ivory Tower' perception we often fight?

As the AEA community, I believe we are uniquely positioned to bridge the gap between Theory (Frameworks/Degrees) and Reality (Agile/Value-driven execution).

Here is a question for the group: Is it time for the AEA to champion a Competency-Based Certification—modeled like a Medical Board or Peer Review—rather than another knowledge-based exam?

We need a way to certify that an architect can respect the 'Old Way' (the necessary foundations of TOGAF/Zachman) but successfully apply it to today's dynamic, high-speed business needs.

Would a 'Board Certified' designation based on proven experience and case studies carry more weight for you than a standard certification?"

Agree. I see countless complaints around not being able to convince the business that an investment in EA capability is 'worth it'.

In my experience this has three core underlying issues. The first is that Architects tend to be weighted more heavily in the technical skills space therefor sell the proposition on the merits of EA capability design to the detriment of strategic contribution.

The second is that EA solutions by their nature demonstrate value in arrears and the third is that for the investment value, success is determined by the contributions, maturity and commitment of a broad spectrum of people including the Architects and Business participants, not just by Architects (after all, its the business case, defining tangible measurement against defined strategic KPI's and the very design of business architecture that underpin the rest of the design and outcomes).

I think elevated certification needs to include significant portion dedicated to the "philosophy" of EA in an organisation prior to delving into frameworks, theory and technicalities, perhaps even as a prerequisite module and certification on its own.
