Agile and Enterprise Architecture

A constellation of new best practices and approaches based on Cloud, Agile, Lean, and DevOps is overtaking older approaches based on physical infrastructure, project management, process management, and functional specialization.  The Digital Practitioners Body of Knowledge Standard (also known as DPBoK) is intended to help put both old and new in a common context, with well-supported analysis of professional practice

Digital practitioners require new skills, including Cloud architecture and operations, continuous delivery and deployment, product management, and more. Individuals must perform effectively in the context of cross-functional teams. There is much debate on how to unify the value and insights of team-based Agile development, with the coordination and governance needs of the large enterprise. The digital enterprise experience requires new thinking in terms of:

 • Governance
 • Information Management
 • Architecture

Agile describes sound approaches and practices for product management with a high R&D component. Using collaborative, focused, cross-functional teams with iterative, feedback-enhanced methods is the most effective approach for solving complex problems (as compared to routing problem-solving work across functional team boundaries with sequential “phase gates”). Where digital systems management involves the discovery of information and coping with “unknown unknowns”, DPBoK favors Agile principles.

Agile main principles and manifesto is based on customer satisfaction through early and continuous delivery of valuable product and welcome changing requirements, even late in development to deliver working software/product development frequently in a short timescale. In this approach, business people and developers must work together daily throughout the project based on consistent collaboration and motivated individuals.

Enterprise Architecture (EA), on the other hand, is about supporting business transformation keeping the alignment with the strategic view in order to pursue an incremental, continuous value delivery addressing concerns from different stakeholders. EA provides guidance and techniques to develop a holistic view for the organization landscape to address complexity and change. It supports business value delivery and also impact and risk assessments across organization and its ecosystem. EA Governance and change management supports compliance and value delivery measure.

The two practices -- Agile and EA -- can be used together and leverage each other.

An effective EA governance leverages Agile providing the required compliance and assurance that the value delivery is really aligned with the organization objectives as a whole.
