Robert M. Weisman wrote on the Chapters: Ottawa-Gatineau wall: 6 October 2016 - The Federal Geospatial Platform: Leveraging Open Standards to Achieve Objectives KPMG Suite 1800 - 150 Elgin Street 1500-1730 hrs You are cordially invited to attend the subject event. To register please follow the attached link. Cost is free. Synopsis Information and data are now the global currency in the 24/7 digital economy. In today’s world, readily and instantly available information are imperative and have emerged as a primary engine of productivity and growth for national economies. In order to fully benefit from their use, and especially to do so in an open and collaborative framework, sharing of these resources must be governed by a set of rules that are reliable, accessible and transferable. The Canadian Federal Committee on Geomatics and Earth Observations recognized a need for a common platform of technical infrastructure, policies, standards, and governance to manage geospatial information assets in a more efficient and coordinated way among its 21 federal departments and agencies. As a result, the Federal Geospatial Platform (FGP), a collaborative online environment consisting of authoritative geospatial data, services, and applications was created. The FGP now plays a key role in bringing together the government’s economic, social and environmental data to better support location-based decision making on a range of complex issues, such as responsible resource development, environmental management, regulatory reviews, and safety and security. This presentation aims to discuss the barriers to information sharing in the e-Government open data and open collaboration context, and to describe the specific suite of open standards, frameworks and policies that were the key to overcoming those barriers on the FGP towards better information sharing and interoperability. Businesses, researchers, governments and individuals who generate, share or use geospatial information will benefit from understanding and adopting standards and policies that allow data to be used for many applications. Leveraging open standards to overcome barriers to interoperability is a universal topic that is of interest to many different organizations wanting to increase the share-ability and value of their information assets. Robert M. Weisman wrote on the Chapters: Ottawa-Gatineau wall: Starting with a hardy Canadian breakfast at the Sheraton Hotel, the Annual General Meeting started with several speakers focusing on Cyber. Symantec, an event sponsor, gave an excellent presentation on the current state of threats being encountered and how architecture is a great help to reduce the threats. The second speaker was Doug Dempster (Exec Director Telfer Centre for Executive Leadership) spoke on complex program management and how EA can contribute to overall program success. The third speaker was Alain Rocan, (President ISACA Ottawa) who spoke about the newly announced Canadian Cybersecurity Alliance followed by Robert Gordon (President Canadian Cyberthreat Exchange Network) which is a newly formed organization to share threats amongst members in real-time. Currently housed in TD Bank (Ottawa) the network will be up and running shortly. Note that the AEA is now a member of the Canadian Cybersecurity Alliance (questions contact The AEA AGM followed the presentations and a review of the current year followed by projections for the future. KPMG was awarded a plaque in recognition of their support of the chapter by providing premises for meetings and presentations. The current arrangement of collaborating with other organizations (e.g. ISACA mainly) has been highly beneficial and made it better for attracting quality speakers. Minutes of the AGM and copies of the presentations are on the AEA Global website for the Ottawa-Gatineau Chapter.

Robert M. Weisman wrote on the Chapters: Ottawa-Gatineau wall: AEA Ottawa-Gatineau Presents: Master Data as a Service (M-DaaS) : Presenter: Phil Dana – Dun & Bradstreet A Joint Association of Enterprise Architects (AEA) and ISACA Ottawa Event Please register at: Thursday, 26 May 2016 from 3:00 PM to 5:30 PM Abstract: Businesses of all shapes and sizes are spending a lot of time and resources to collect, synthesize and leverage data in support of their business objectives. The explosion of open data, along with the Internet of Things (IoT), has led to the creation of the greatest data pool in the history of man. Over time, as organizations have “bellied up” to this data, they have created vast collections of disconnected data silos which are complex unto themselves, and virtually impossible to integrate across the enterprise. At the heart of many organizations exists customer and vendor data which has been collected over time to support key operational and strategic uses. This data may support both client facing as well as back-office systems, and is often re-purposed to support many business uses for which it wasn’t originally designed for. Yet, for many organizations, this precious asset has been allowed to erode and degrade to a point of criticality, and declining or questionable value and trust. In this session, Mr. Dana will articulate the growing data challenges and opportunities for businesses to take a new approach to leveraging data. He will explore the Master Data Management (MDM) hype cycle, and consider basic and advanced data concepts which organizations are attempting to leverage. He will also review “real world” examples of organizational attempts to mature their master data, which are based on highly efficient and repeatable architectures and processes. Finally, Mr. Dana will discuss the service opportunity to support MDM and data analytics as a core service. Biography: Phil Dana is a 30 year veteran of the IT industry, and has spent the last 20 years supporting the Canadian Federal Government in Ottawa. His background and domain expertise is in data, with significant experience in business intelligence and data warehousing solutions. He participated in the market definition and launch of Cognos BI tools, and supported many client implementations across North America. He also led and managed ERP and BI services delivery organizations while at Deloitte Consulting and CGI Group. Currently, Mr. Dana is Director, Business Development, Global Government Solutions at Dun and Bradstreet where he leads major client implementations of D&B big data solutions.
